Access of Resource Using Incompatible Type ('Type Confusion') (CWE-843)
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Siemens Simcenter Femap. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of IGS files within the IGES_2022_2 executable. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a type confusion condition. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process.
If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected Siemens Simcenter Femap installations. This could potentially lead to full system compromise, data theft, or further network infiltration. The attack requires user interaction, as the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The CVSS v3 base score is 7.8 (High), with high impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
One proof-of-concept exploit is available on zerodayinitiative.com. There is no evidence of proof of exploitation at the moment.
Siemens has issued an update to correct this vulnerability. Security teams should prioritize applying this patch to all affected Simcenter Femap installations.
1. Apply the security update provided by Siemens as soon as possible. 2. Implement user awareness training to recognize and avoid interacting with potentially malicious files or web pages. 3. Implement the principle of least privilege for users who need to work with IGS files. 4. Consider implementing application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized executables from running. 5. Regularly monitor and audit systems for any suspicious activities, especially those related to the IGES_2022_2 executable. 6. If immediate patching is not possible, consider isolating affected systems or restricting access to them until the patch can be applied.
