Summary

Windows MSHTML Platform Spoofing Vulnerability. This is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability that affects the Windows MSHTML Platform. It is classified as a spoofing vulnerability, which means it could allow an attacker to present false information or impersonate a trusted entity.

Impact

This vulnerability has a high confidentiality impact, potentially allowing attackers to access sensitive information. The attack vector is network-based, requiring user interaction. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to user data, session hijacking, or phishing attacks. While integrity and availability are not directly impacted, the spoofing nature of the vulnerability could lead to users unknowingly interacting with malicious content.

Exploitation

There is no evidence that a public proof-of-concept exists. The vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild and was added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerability list. Its exploitation has been reported by various sources, including tenable.com. Threat Actor Void Banshee (source:darkreading) has been identified as exploiting this vulnerability.

Patch

A patch is available. Microsoft released an update to address this vulnerability on October 8, 2024.

Mitigation

1. Apply the security update provided by Microsoft immediately. 2. Implement strong content security policies to mitigate XSS attacks. 3. Educate users about the risks of clicking on untrusted links or interacting with suspicious web content. 4. Consider using browser extensions or security software that can detect and prevent XSS attacks. 5. Regularly update and patch all Windows systems and applications. 6. Implement network segmentation to limit the potential spread of an attack if a system is compromised.

CVE-2024-43573 - Security Update Guide - Microsoft - Windows MSHTML Platform Spoofing Vulnerability
The Security Updates table indicates that this vulnerability affects all supported versions of Microsoft Windows except Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012. Why are IE Cumulative updates listed for Windows Server 2012 R2? While Microsoft has announced retirement of the Internet Explorer 11 application on certain platforms and the Microsoft Edge Legacy application is deprecated, the underlying MSHTML, EdgeHTML, and scripting platforms are still supported. The MSHTML platform is used by Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge as well as other applications through WebBrowser control. The EdgeHTML platform is used by WebView and some UWP applications. The scripting platforms are used by MSHTML and EdgeHTML but can also be used by other legacy applications. Updates to address vulnerabilities in the MSHTML platform and scripting engine are included in the IE Cumulative Updates; EdgeHTML and Chakra changes are not applicable to those platforms. To stay fully protected, we recommend that customers who install Security Only updates install the IE Cumulative updates for this vulnerability.

What is known about the Spoofing – Windows MSHTML Platform (CVE-2024-43573) vulnerability from the October Microsoft Patch Tuesday ? ZDI suggested that this could be an additional fix for a similar July vulnerability Spoofing – Windows MSHTML Platform (CVE-2024-38112).
Your PC's days are numbered - you need to do this before it's too late - this is the last week
Basically, it’s a special Windows shortcut file that, when clicked, opens the old Internet Explorer (IE) to load a web page controlled by the attacker. The interesting thing about this warning is that there are still 900 million Windows 10 users who have not yet upgraded to Windows 11, (although there is only a year left until Windows 10 ends support).
CISA: CISA Adds Three Known Exploited Vulnerabilities to Catalog
CISA has added three new vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog , based on evidence of active exploitation. CVE-2024-43047 Qualcomm Multiple Chipsets Use-After-Free Vulnerability CVE-2024-43572 Microsoft Windows Management Console Remote Code Execution Vulnerability CVE-2024-43573 Microsoft Windows MSHTML Platform Spoofing Vulnerability These types of vulnerabilities are frequent attack vectors for malicious cyber actors and pose significant risks to the federal enterprise. Binding Operational Directive (BOD) 22-01: Reducing the Significant Risk of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities established the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog as a living list of known Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) that carry significant risk to the federal enterprise. BOD 22-01 requires Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies to remediate identified vulnerabilities by the due date to protect FCEB networks against active threats. See the BOD 22-01 Fact Sheet for more information. Although BOD 22-01 only applies to FCEB agencies, CISA strongly urges all organizations to reduce their exposure to cyberattacks by prioritizing timely remediation of Catalog vulnerabilities as part of their vulnerability management practice. CISA will continue to add vulnerabilities to the catalog that meet the specified criteria .
