Summary

Windows Hyper-V Shared Virtual Disk Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability. This is a network-based vulnerability with low attack complexity and requires low privileges to exploit. It does not require user interaction and has high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Impact

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to elevate privileges within the Windows Hyper-V environment. The attacker could potentially gain unauthorized access to shared virtual disks, compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data stored on these disks. Given the high impact on all three aspects (confidentiality, integrity, and availability), this vulnerability could lead to significant data breaches, unauthorized modifications to virtual disk contents, or disruption of services relying on shared virtual disks.

Patch

A patch is available. Microsoft has released an official fix for this vulnerability on November 12, 2024.

Mitigation

1. Apply the official patch released by Microsoft as soon as possible. 2. Limit network access to Hyper-V hosts and management interfaces to trusted networks and users only. 3. Implement strong authentication and access controls for Hyper-V management. 4. Monitor Hyper-V environments for suspicious activities, especially those related to shared virtual disk access. 5. Keep all Hyper-V components and related Windows systems up to date with the latest security patches. 6. Consider implementing network segmentation to isolate Hyper-V environments from other parts of the network.
