Summary

WikiDiscover, an extension for CreateWiki managed farms to display wikis, contains a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in its Special:WikiDiscover page. The special page fails to properly escape wiki names and descriptions, allowing potential execution of malicious scripts when viewing affected wikis on the Special:WikiDiscover page.

Impact

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of other users' browsers when they visit the Special:WikiDiscover page. This can lead to theft of sensitive information, session hijacking, or other malicious actions performed on behalf of the victim. The impact is somewhat mitigated by the fact that it requires user interaction (visiting the Special:WikiDiscover page) and privileged access (ability to set wiki names or descriptions).

Exploitation

There is no evidence that a public proof-of-concept exists. There is no evidence of proof of exploitation at the moment.

Patch

A patch is available. The issue has been fixed with commit `2ce846dd93`. All users are advised to apply this patch to their WikiDiscover extension.

Mitigation

1. Apply the patch (commit `2ce846dd93`) to the WikiDiscover extension immediately. 2. For users unable to upgrade, block access to the `Special:WikiDiscover` page as a temporary mitigation measure. 3. Review and sanitize existing wiki names and descriptions to remove any potential XSS payloads. 4. Implement input validation and output encoding for wiki names and descriptions to prevent future XSS vulnerabilities. 5. Consider implementing Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate the impact of XSS attacks.
