Summary

A critical vulnerability has been identified in multiple D-Link NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. The affected function is sprintf in the file /cgi-bin/hd_config.cgi. The vulnerability allows for command injection through the manipulation of the f_mount argument. This issue affects various D-Link models including DNS-120, DNR-202L, DNS-315L, DNS-320, DNS-320L, DNS-320LW, DNS-321, DNR-322L, DNS-323, DNS-325, DNS-326, DNS-327L, DNR-326, DNS-340L, DNS-343, DNS-345, DNS-726-4, DNS-1100-4, DNS-1200-05 and DNS-1550-04, up to the version released on August 14, 2024.

Impact

The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the affected devices. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, modification of system configurations, or use of the compromised device as a foothold for further network attacks. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 6.3 (Medium), with low impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. However, the attack vector is network-based, requires low complexity, and no user interaction, making it relatively easy to exploit.

Exploitation

One proof-of-concept exploit is available on github.com. There is no evidence of proof of exploitation at the moment.

Patch

No patch is available for this vulnerability. The vendor (D-Link) has confirmed that the affected products are end-of-life and no longer supported. The recommendation is to retire and replace these devices.

Mitigation

Given that no patch is available and the affected devices are end-of-life, the primary mitigation strategy is to replace these vulnerable devices with newer, supported models. In the interim, if immediate replacement is not possible, consider the following measures: 1. Isolate affected devices from the internet and restrict network access to trusted sources only. 2. Implement strong network segmentation to limit the potential impact of a compromise. 3. Monitor these devices closely for any signs of suspicious activity. 4. If possible, disable remote access to the device's web interface. 5. Ensure all other network security measures (firewalls, intrusion detection systems, etc.) are up-to-date and properly configured to detect and prevent potential exploitation attempts. However, it's crucial to emphasize that these are temporary measures, and the devices should be replaced as soon as possible to ensure network security.

US-CERT Vulnerability Summary for the Week of August 26, 2024
The CISA Vulnerability Bulletin provides a summary of new vulnerabilities that have been recorded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database (NVD) in the past week. In some cases, the vulnerabilities in the bulletin may not yet have assigned CVSS scores. Please visit NVD for updated vulnerability entries, which include CVSS scores once they are available. Vulnerabilities are based on the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) vulnerability naming standard and are organized according to severity, determined by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) standard. The division of high, medium, and low severities correspond to the following scores: High : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 7.0–10.0 Medium : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 4.0–6.9 Low : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 0.0–3.9 Entries may include additional information provided by organizations and efforts sponsored by CISA. This information may include identifying information, values, definitions, and related links.
