Summary

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in multiple D-Link NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices, affecting the function cgi_FMT_Std2R1_DiskMGR of the file /cgi-bin/hd_config.cgi. The vulnerability allows for command injection through the manipulation of the argument f_newly_dev. This can be exploited remotely without requiring user interaction or special privileges. The affected devices include D-Link DNS-120, DNR-202L, DNS-315L, DNS-320, DNS-320L, DNS-320LW, DNS-321, DNR-322L, DNS-323, DNS-325, DNS-326, DNS-327L, DNR-326, DNS-340L, DNS-343, DNS-345, DNS-726-4, DNS-1100-4, DNS-1200-05 and DNS-1550-04 up to 20240814. It's important to note that this vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer and are considered end-of-life.

Impact

If exploited, this vulnerability could lead to complete system compromise. An attacker could potentially execute arbitrary commands on the affected devices, leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or system manipulation. The high severity is reflected in the CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.8, indicating critical impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system. Given that these are NAS devices, the potential for data breach or loss is significant. Additionally, compromised devices could be used as entry points for further network infiltration or as part of a botnet for larger-scale attacks.

Exploitation

One proof-of-concept exploit is available on github.com. There is no evidence of proof of exploitation at the moment.

Patch

A patch is available. D-Link has released information about this vulnerability on their support announcement page at https://supportannouncement.us.dlink.com/security/publication.aspx?name=SAP10383. However, it's crucial to understand that this vulnerability affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer and are considered end-of-life. This means that while information is available, active patching or updates for these devices may not be provided by D-Link.

Mitigation

Given that the affected products are end-of-life and no longer supported, the primary recommendation is to retire and replace these devices. If immediate replacement is not feasible, consider implementing the following mitigation strategies: 1. Isolate affected devices from the internet and restrict network access to trusted sources only. 2. Monitor these devices closely for any suspicious activities. 3. Implement strong access controls and authentication mechanisms. 4. Regularly backup data stored on these devices. 5. Plan for immediate replacement with supported, up-to-date NAS solutions. 6. If possible, disable the vulnerable CGI script or implement strict input validation for the f_newly_dev parameter. 7. Conduct a thorough security assessment to identify any potential compromises or unauthorized access. 8. Consider using network segmentation to isolate these vulnerable devices from critical parts of the network. 9. Implement intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS) to monitor for potential exploitation attempts.

US-CERT Vulnerability Summary for the Week of August 26, 2024
The CISA Vulnerability Bulletin provides a summary of new vulnerabilities that have been recorded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database (NVD) in the past week. In some cases, the vulnerabilities in the bulletin may not yet have assigned CVSS scores. Please visit NVD for updated vulnerability entries, which include CVSS scores once they are available. Vulnerabilities are based on the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) vulnerability naming standard and are organized according to severity, determined by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) standard. The division of high, medium, and low severities correspond to the following scores: High : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 7.0–10.0 Medium : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 4.0–6.9 Low : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 0.0–3.9 Entries may include additional information provided by organizations and efforts sponsored by CISA. This information may include identifying information, values, definitions, and related links.
