Summary

A critical vulnerability has been discovered in D-Link DIR-605L router firmware version 2.13B01 BETA. The vulnerability affects the formWlanWizardSetup function in the /goform/formWlanWizardSetup file. By manipulating the 'webpage' argument, an attacker can cause a buffer overflow. This vulnerability can be exploited remotely, and the exploit has been publicly disclosed.

Impact

The impact of this vulnerability is severe. If exploited, it could lead to complete compromise of the affected D-Link DIR-605L routers. The attacker could potentially gain unauthorized access, execute arbitrary code, or cause system crashes. This vulnerability has high impacts on confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system. Remote exploitation without user interaction increases the risk significantly. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.8 (High) and a CVSS v4.0 base score of 8.7 (High), indicating its critical nature.

Exploitation

One proof-of-concept exploit is available on github.com. There is no evidence of proof of exploitation at the moment.

Patch

As of the latest information provided, there is no mention of an available patch for this vulnerability. Given the critical nature of the issue and its public disclosure, it is crucial to monitor D-Link's security advisories for any forthcoming patches or firmware updates addressing this vulnerability.

Mitigation

Until a patch is available, consider the following mitigation strategies: 1. Isolate affected D-Link DIR-605L routers (version 2.13B01 BETA) from the internet and limit their exposure to trusted networks only. 2. Implement strong network segmentation to minimize the potential impact if a device is compromised. 3. Monitor logs and network traffic for any suspicious activities related to the /goform/formWlanWizardSetup endpoint. 4. If possible, disable or restrict access to the vulnerable formWlanWizardSetup function. 5. Consider replacing the affected routers with alternative, non-vulnerable models if immediate patching is not possible. 6. Regularly check for firmware updates from D-Link and apply them as soon as they become available. 7. Implement additional network security measures such as intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS) to detect and block potential exploitation attempts.

US-CERT Vulnerability Summary for the Week of October 7, 2024
The CISA Vulnerability Bulletin provides a summary of new vulnerabilities that have been recorded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Vulnerability Database (NVD) in the past week. In some cases, the vulnerabilities in the bulletin may not yet have assigned CVSS scores. Please visit NVD for updated vulnerability entries, which include CVSS scores once they are available. Vulnerabilities are based on the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) vulnerability naming standard and are organized according to severity, determined by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) standard. The division of high, medium, and low severities correspond to the following scores: High : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 7.0–10.0 Medium : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 4.0–6.9 Low : vulnerabilities with a CVSS base score of 0.0–3.9 Entries may include additional information provided by organizations and efforts sponsored by CISA. This information may include identifying information, values, definitions, and related links.
